In the summer of 2004 i was googling myself.  The idea that i might use the internet as a way to discover family history was not a unique one.  In the end I ran across a google hit (like page 19 or something) that was this crazy story about a negro spy in the revolution and that began my interest in James' story.  

Using Google Image is a device I have often used in my work.  I once printed every resutl on the term "african" and produced a wall installation from it.

In this case I used Google Image to assemble an "image base" of samples to reconfigure that regard James.  The process hase taken years of very fun work and led to everything from collage in 2005 to movie set backdrops in 2008.
